Janie L. Cohen

Janie L. Cohen entered into God’s Kingdom on July 28, 2024, at age 94. Janie was born November 6, 1929, on McFeely Row amongst her vast family and was the 15th of 16 children.  She was born to the late George Washington Clayton and Hattie Mae Bolds.  Throughout Janie’s entire life, she held an unwavering faith in God, which she shared with those who surrounded her and was The Congregational Mother of New Creation Family Worship Center in Greensburg, PA.  Janie enjoyed playing the piano, crocheting, cooking, but most of all she loved her family and surrounding community.  Janie was a pillar of her family and matriarch to many who she came in contact with.  Janie was passionate about sharing the love of our Lord with others and was an integral part of New Creation Family Worship Center in Greensburg, PA. A loyal servant to God, Janie spent the majority of her life to her calling of music and leadership. Now that Janie has passed into the arms of our Lord, we should remind ourselves that while this is the end of Janie’s physical life on Earth, it’s the beginning of an eternal and beautiful journey for her.  Those of us who were Blessed to be touched by her understand that her existence and the imprint She left on our hearts exceed the quantity of time that She stayed here.  Her family consisted of two children, Marsha Freeman of Latrobe, PA and Sherman Cohen (Marleen) of Aurora, CO; three grandchildren, Felicia Mendez of Fort Worth, TX, Eric Cohen currently stationed overseas, and Tenisha Phillips of Dallas, TX; four great grandchildren, Angelica Mendez, Kaiden Phillips, Emmalyne Mendez, and Nyla Phillips; eight brothers, Thomas, Samuel, Washington Jr., Prince, Joseph, Stephen, Daniel, and Richard; seven sisters, Anna, Mary, Martha, Lillian, Hattie, Dorothy, and Willa Mae.  Family will receive friends for Janie’s Life Celebration 3-7PM Friday, August 2, 2024, in the Matthew X. Merlin Funeral Home, Inc., 529 N. Chestnut St., Derry, PA 15627, 724-694-8331.  A Funeral Service will take place Saturday, August 3, 2024, at 11 AM in the New Creation Family Worship Center, 119 Westmoreland Ave Greensburg PA 15717.
