Hershel Ray Rice Sr., 85, of Derry, died on Saturday, May 19, 2018, at his home surrounded by his family. He was born September 3, 1932 in Fairmont, West Virginia, the son of late Willard Oakel and Hattie Mae (Dillon) Rice. Prior to retirement Hershel worked for Pennsylvania Railroad, Penn Central Railroad and Conrail for 42 years. He was a member of the NRA. Hershel enjoyed hunting, riding motorcycles, gardening, and working in his garage. Besides his parents Hershel is preceded in death by his two brothers James Dean and Albert Rice and two sisters Genevieve Losier and Geraldine Hall. Hershel is survived by his loving wife of 50 years Lillian D. (Swartz) Rice of Derry; two sons Efran L. Ortiz of Derry and Hershel Ray Rice Jr. of Blairsville; one daughter Beatriz P. Ortiz of Derry; five grandchildren Lily Ortiz, Deion Ray Ortiz-Pasterick, Santos Ortiz-Pasterick, Felicia Rice, and Hershel Ray Rice III and wife Erin; one great grandson Xavier Rice, and many nieces, nephews and friends. The family has entrusted the Matthew X. Merlin Funeral Home Inc. 529 N. Chestnut St. Derry, PA 724-694-8331 with the funeral arrangements.
